Music of the 1980s

The ‘80s was not my favorite era. Since my school days were the mid 1960s and most of the 1970s (I graduated in 1978) I did not like much of the music of the ‘80s - except for a couple of Madonna songs, a few Motels songs, Cyndi Lauper, the Cars, and several other bands-- I never cared for Van Halen, either. Of all the artists that came out of the '80s Cyndi Lauper had the most unique look and music style (Click to Tweet).

Cyndi Lauper's 1983 debut album sounds as amazing as she is strange. With her bright orange, teased hair (shaved on one side of her head), Cyndi Lauper could be someone straight out of a comic book!

But despite her gimmicky look and style, this woman is highly original, and entertaining. With "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" Cyndi introduces her "hiccup" type expression, as in "(hiccup) oh, she bop!"

"She Bop" is my personal favorite; I love the stealthy-sound of the bassline, and just the general "feel" of the song. Madonna had a hit with "Material Girl" at the same time "She Bop" was on the charts - and Madonna also did a type of hiccup-type singing on her song, coincidentally.

Cyndi's musical genre: new wave, pop/rock, or "synthpop." This set includes her string of Top 40 hits: "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", and "All Through the Night".

Other songs, "Money Changes Everything", "When You Were Mine", "Witness", "I'll Kiss You", and "He's so Unusual" are included in this compilation.

Cyndi's Musical Genre

I think Cyndi's genre can be any of these three:

  • Techno-Pop
  • New Wave
  • Techno-Pop/New Wave (a combination of the two)

The Tracks Of "She's So Unusual"

  1. "Money Changes Everything" jumps right in with a dynamic organ slide, up and down the keys. This song is fun and lively, but it can be a little repetitious.
  2. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" makes you want to get up and move around, and was a huge hit on the Charts.
  3. "When You Were Mine" is only an okay song, but it is not her best work.
  4. "Time After Time" is a beautiful song that gets stuck in your head, but you don't mind because it's that good.
  5. "She Bop" is another popular song; the walking bass line is sneaky-sounding, and has a James Bond feel to it.
  6. "All Through the Night" is also quite haunting, and was another big hit for Cyndi on the Charts.

The remaining tracks: 7. "Witness" 8. "I'll Kiss You" 9. "He's so Unusual" 10. "Yeah Yeah" are okay songs, too, but just not as good as the others on this set.

Cyndi Lauper's music is appropriate for all audiences. Adults and children will enjoy this music because of it's original sound and energetic style. "She's so Unusual" has many upbeat songs and won the 1983 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.
